Balance is a dance within between pushing and pulling, engagement and relaxation, firing and softening. Speaking of posture, the muscular strength required to support ourselves is balanced with softening and expansiveness so we are relaxed and pain free. An energetic boundary is created with balanced action. With focus, we can observe ourselves and feel this dance within.
Muscular and Organic energy are two primary energy flows that dance together harmoniously in a balanced body. Muscular energy draws in confidently and creates support for our bones and joints. Organic energy flows outwardly and allows for a flowing expression and the creativity of softness.
When the primary energy flows are out of balance, we over emphasize one aspect and our posture, mobility and disposition is effected. If we have too much muscular energy, we may find our body rigid. Rigidity in our body can relate to how we interact with the world. The more rigid we are physically, the less flexible our approach may be in life. If we have an over-expression of organic energy, results may include limited muscular strength, hyper mobile joints, a lack of drive and weak boundaries. This is how the body and mind are connected.
In my classes I teach you to develop body awareness. Understanding muscular and organic energy flow leads to the discovery of more balance. As you hold yourself with supportive strength you can push into your physical boundaries to express more fully. Let go of over-exerting muscles and soften to release tension and feel spacious. When balance is found between muscular and organic energy on the mat, poses feel more stable and sustainable. If you can embody this balance off the mat, you will feel a more balanced posture, find more ease of movement and feel more balanced mentally.
